Not everything can go in your trash or recycling cart—and that's a good thing. Certain items can damage equipment, create safety hazards, or require special handling to protect people and the environment.

Items That Should NOT Go in Your Trash or Recycling Cart

Some common examples include:

TVs, computer monitors, laptops, and computer towers
Batteries
Aerosol cans that still contain product
Gasoline, diesel fuel, and other fuels
Antifreeze
Liquid paint, paint thinner, paint stripper, and varnish
Pesticides and herbicides
Mercury-containing items
Driveway sealer
Wood preservatives
Other products that are corrosive, flammable, combustible, or poisonous

Where Can I Take Household Hazardous Waste?

Each county has collection sites and programs that safely dispose of hazardous household materials. Visit your county's household hazardous waste program for current locations, accepted materials, and hours of operation.
